Gratitude journal examples: six ways to write a specific entry

A gratitude journal entry can be as short as one sentence. The examples below show different ways to describe something you appreciated and why it mattered. They are invented illustrations, not testimonials or entries from real users.

Updated

1. A one-line entry

When you only want to write a little

I appreciated the neighbour who brought my parcel in before the rain started.

One action is enough to make the entry recognisable. You can stop here, or add what it saved you having to do.

2. A person who helped

From a general subject to a particular moment

I am grateful to Jo for reading my application yesterday. She asked what I wanted to say before suggesting changes, which helped it still sound like me.

Instead of “I am grateful for Jo,” the writer records what Jo did and why her approach mattered. Use someone’s initials if you prefer not to write their name.

3. An ordinary comfort

Something easy to overlook

I appreciated opening the window while I made breakfast. I could hear someone practising piano across the courtyard, and I stayed at the table a little longer.

There is no major milestone here. The sound and setting make a small part of the morning worth remembering.

4. A difficult day with one helpful moment

Without pretending everything was fine

The meeting was hard and I am still upset about it. I appreciated Maya asking whether I wanted company on the way home, then listening without trying to sort it out.

The writer acknowledges the difficulty and a separate act of care. You do not have to be grateful for the difficult event itself.

5. Something you learned

Remembering how a small skill arrived

I fixed the loose handle on my cupboard today. I appreciated my uncle showing me how to use the right screwdriver last month, and being patient while I tried.

This links a present moment to help received earlier. Gratitude does not have to be limited to something that happened today.

6. A weekly reflection

Finding a thread across a few days

This week I appreciated the short conversations at the corner shop. On Tuesday we talked about the weather; on Friday the owner asked how my presentation had gone. Being recognised made a busy week feel a little more familiar.

A weekly entry can stay with one theme. It does not need to list everything you did or make up for days when you did not write.

Turn an example into your own entry

Choose the example closest to the kind of moment you want to record. Borrow its structure rather than its story. Start by naming what happened, then add one detail that only belongs to your experience.

  1. Write “I appreciated…” and name a real moment.

  2. Add what someone did, or what you noticed.

  3. Explain why it mattered to you. Leave this out if the first sentence already says enough.

A few common questions

Keep your next entry small

umi can remind you to return to your journal. Choose a time that fits, and write in the place you prefer.

“Every Friday at 6 pm, remind me to write one specific thing I appreciated this week.”

umi is an AI companion in iMessage. Wait for confirmation that your reminder is saved; delivery times are approximate. You can change or cancel it in the conversation.
