Looking for an iPhone reminder app? Try iMessage reminders

The right iPhone reminder app depends on what you want to happen after the alert. Apple Reminders gives you tasks to organise and tick off. umi, Astumi’s AI companion, sends reminders you request into an iMessage conversation where you can reply. Here is how to choose between those two approaches.

Updated

Choose the reminder experience you want

Start with one real task. Perhaps you want to call your sister on Sunday, read a few pages before bed or take a lunchtime walk. Then decide whether you want a task on a list or a check-in you can answer. That decision is more useful than collecting features you may never use.

  • Choose a task-list app when you want to see upcoming jobs together, organise them and mark them complete.

  • Consider iMessage reminders when you want to request a nudge in everyday language and reply in the same conversation.

  • For medication logging or alerts that must break through silent settings, check the specific features of a dedicated tool before choosing.

When Apple Reminders fits

Apple Reminders supports dated tasks, location alerts, subtasks and attachments. You can use Siri to add a reminder, then return to the app to organise or complete it. Apple’s setup guide, linked below, explains the available controls.

This is a useful fit for a shopping list, a collection of errands or a task that matters when you arrive somewhere. If you want one place to inspect outstanding tasks and tick them off, that list-based structure is a good starting point.

Some features depend on your iOS version and settings. Apple also documents urgent reminders with alarms on supported versions. A conversational reminder should not be assumed to have the same alert behaviour.

An iPhone reminder app alternative inside iMessage

umi works through iMessage after you complete setup on the Astumi website. There is no separate Astumi iPhone app to download today. You send a request, umi saves the reminder and confirms it, then sends a personal check-in when it is due. Delivery times are approximate.

You can request a one-off reminder, a daily check-in, particular weekdays or a repeating interval. umi uses the timezone saved during setup. If a request needs more detail, answer the follow-up question and wait for confirmation before relying on the schedule.

A weekday reading reminder

Remind me to read for ten minutes every weekday at 9 pm.

An illustrative request. It names the activity, the days and the time; it does not create a reminder until you send it to umi after setup and receive confirmation.

When the message arrives, you can reply about how it went, ask to change the reminder or talk through a smaller next step. umi is AI. It relies on what you tell it and does not automatically detect that you read, walked or completed another habit.

Are iMessage reminders the same as “When Messaging”?

No. Apple Reminders has a “When Messaging” option: choose a person, and a Reminders notification appears the next time you chat with them in Messages. It is useful for remembering something you want to bring up with that person.

A reminder from umi is a message sent to your conversation at the scheduled time. You do not need to begin a chat with someone else to trigger that check-in. These are different features, even though both involve Messages.

What to check before choosing a reminder app

  • Schedule: can it express the days and times you actually need? Try a simple recurring task first.

  • Notification behaviour: check how alerts appear with your own notification and Focus settings. A message is not a guaranteed alarm.

  • Completion: decide whether you need a task history, medication log or habit streak. umi does not automatically track completed habits or maintain a habit score.

  • Changes: make sure you know how to move or cancel a reminder. With umi, ask in the conversation and wait for confirmation.

  • Cost and privacy: review the current signup offer and data policy before starting. Astumi stores messages and reminders, with OpenAI processing relevant conversation context and Sendblue handling messaging.

Start with one routine you want to keep

Choose a reminder that would make tomorrow a little easier. Keep its wording specific enough that you know what to do when it arrives. “Read ten pages” gives you a clearer starting point than “be productive.”

Adjust the plan when your day changes

Move my weekday reading reminder to 8:30 pm.

An illustrative change request for an existing reminder. Wait for umi to confirm the update. If several reminders could match, identify the one you mean.

Try that routine before adding more. If you prefer seeing a list of tasks, a dedicated reminder app may suit you better. If you like being able to answer a check-in and continue the conversation, umi offers that experience in iMessage.
